ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on two types of personal narrative writing: the 'This I Believe' essay and the memoir. Each of these narrative writing tasks invites my students to think carefully about craft and voice, and how to best reach an audience, and both tasks are enhanced by the technology that we use to help organize and present our ideas. The chapter shares some strategies, including literature circles and the use of comics for retelling and response that invite students to think deeply about narratives. It explores some strategies to meet narrative reading and writing standards using laptops and tablets and multiple digital tools to help enhance any narrative lesson or unit while meeting the needs of the CCSS. Then the chapter covers three types of narrative writing: 'This I Believe' essays, memoirs, and digital stories.
