ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines and examines the relevance of the Speaker, Occasion, Audience, and Pur-pose within reading, writing, and speaking. Activities for student reading and exploration of nonfiction will be included. Building upon S.O.A.P., the rhetorical situation, and bias, this assignment transitions students from identifying the latter to demonstrating their understanding through analysis, synthesis, and application of these techniques. This section is one about discoveries, origins, and reception. A sample lesson involves students researching a mundane object and how it changed the world as the people of that time knew it. Not all discoveries are celebrated, so students must consider how society received the invention or discovery upon its introduction.
