ABSTRACT

There is a myth that because narrative appears as a smaller percentage in secondary writing classes, perhaps the ability to use its techniques is less important in the eyes of Common Core. This is false. In fact, without narrative techniques, an argument would be nothing more than a summary plus an opinion. There is a list of narrative concepts that teachers in areas outside of ELA ought to be aware of. They are: figurative language; sequence (plot structure); and theme. According to the Common Core, while other subject areas are now expected to utilize writing, ELA is now expected to utilize other content areas. The author's narrative unit focuses on historical fiction and science fiction writing. It is a unit that uses strategies and assessments that can be tapped into for many informational reading and writing units.
