ABSTRACT
As the cliché used in Chapter 1 tells us: ‘cultural life does not take place in a vacuum’. As we have seen, a key component of this statement is ‘take place’, and it is this component we shall explore in detail in the following two chapters. Chapter 5 focuses on how groups take place through the exercise of power. It investigates how power can be understood and how it affects both culture and geography. In this chapter, we focus on the different ways we can understand the notion of ‘place’ itself.
