ABSTRACT

We have seen how vital place is to cultures. In taking and making place different cultural groups generate an array of traces that have the effect, intentionally or otherwise, of arranging, managing, shaping, and transforming places in line with their belief systems and political values. As we all leave traces through our everyday actions, we all contribute to taking and making place. As Maxey (1999: 201) outlines, the cultural world

is produced through the acts each of us engages with every day. Everything we do, every thought we have, contributes to the production of the social world . . . We are in a sense all activists, as we are all engaged in producing the world.
