ABSTRACT

As we have argued throughout this book, places are ongoing compositions of traces. These traces can be both material and mental in nature. They can take physical shape as things, events, and processes, and they can involve emotional, intellectual, and psychological connections. As we will see in this chapter, how different groups think and feel about places is as important as the physical form places take. This is because our thoughts and feelings about place often directly influence how we act in the cultural world. Nature is a key example of this process. In this chapter we explore how our thoughts and feelings about nature influence how we take and make its places.
