Substances are broadly defined in DSM-IV to include drugs of abuse; the side effects of prescribed or over-the-counter medications; and such toxins as heavy metals, pesticides, and carbon monoxide. Therefore, SubstanceRelated Disorders encompass the effects of a wide variety of psychoactive chem icals. Disorders in this section are divided into two groups: Substance Use Dis orders (Substance Dependence and Abuse) and Substance-Induced Disorders.
