ABSTRACT

This volume has covered a lot of ground, and has presented information on a diversity of issues involved in eyewitness identification. For some of these questions our knowledge is largely clear, and we know enough to frame good advice for practitioners; for others, we can issue cautions and provide an assessment of what the research literature presently says. There are also some areas in which we can identify differences between what preferred practice is at present and what is recommended practice on the basis of the research we have presented. Although the details have been more fully developed in the respective chapters, we take this opportunity to underscore some of the more useful and important points and to address some questions that are currently discussed quite controversially. We also pinpoint a few topics for which we believe more research should be conducted to improve our knowledge base.
