ABSTRACT

With an estimated ten million office visits per year 1 in the United States, vaginitis is one of the most common reasons women see a gynecologist. A vaginal infection usually is first noticed as an abnormal discharge. Irritation, burning on urination, itching, and difficulty during sexual intercourse may be experienced. Urinary tract infections (UTI) generally affect women, although men with diminished urine flow or prostate hypertrophy may acquire a UTI. UTI are common, and although easily treated, are frustrating when they continue to recur. Probiotics are potentially helpful for some forms of vaginal infections and recurrent UTI.
