ABSTRACT

In the process of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the triggering stimulus from one of our five senses enters the region of the brain where the alarm center is located, buried deep like a wartime command center. The alarm system is in this region, just as it is in the systems of other higher mammals. For humans it is also a center for producing a sense of dread. The enormous glucose consumption may lead to fibromyalgia. 'Fibro' is not infrequently seen in support groups. A surprisingly high number of persons come to a support group who suffer from the bipolar condition. For this reason, the consultant in a support group needs to have a good working relationship with a psychiatrist with expertise in OCD. Hypochondriasis is one of the OCD spectrum disorders that may be seen in support groups. In this the person exaggerates physical sensations and obsesses about them as health problems.
