In the summer of 1993, worldwide news media covered a sensation al story of a Virginia couple, John and Lorena Bobbitt. Theirs was a marriage fraught with frequent and violent conflict. Late on a June night, after a particularly intense confrontation, Lorena cut off John’s penis with a kitchen knife while he was sleeping.
