ABSTRACT
Families that seek treatment for a chemically dependent member often feel sucked into a pit of despair, it becomes essential to find tools that can be simple to apply, and work incrementally without ever tackling more than possible at any given time. This chapter is about a tool, an approach to treatment, based on an integration of Vernon Johnson's Intervention Model (JIM), Task Centered Clinical Social Work (TCSW), and Structural Systems Engagement (SSE). The focused family intervention (FFI) is a resource to treat intractable chemically dependent patients. The chapter illustrates how this approach utilizes the strength, wisdom, and resources in the family to bring about change and promote the initiating and engaging steps in the recovery process. It also reviews selected intervention models and uses illustrative cases to discuss the ways those models have been used effectively. The central themes in the chapter involve focused, active, compassionate, effective approaches to invite and formulate change with chemically dependent families.
