ABSTRACT

There are no ‘official’ guidelines for a music curriculum. In many subjects the prospect of public examination at the age of 16 influences, either directly or indirectly, curriculum content throughout secondary education. This need not be so for less than one per cent of 16 year olds sit the public examination in music and only approximately ten per cent learn to play instruments; therefore curriculum design ought to be focussed largely on the remaining ninety per cent.
