The question of transcendence has been dominant in two philosophical contexts: (1) the epistemological and ontological context of human subjectivity in its theoretical and practical relations to the world and (2) the context of philosophical theology. Socrates' pointing to the Good as that which, from "beyond the ousial' grants being, light, and truth gave orientation to Plotinus, Pseudo-Dionysius, and Saint Bonaventure in both areas, and they were not the only ones who were grateful for his suggestions.
