ABSTRACT

It may be well now to make out a brief summary of the results at which we have arrived in the investigation we have been through.

Our object was to institute a philosophical inquiry into the general structure of music, in order to ascertain how far it was based on physical data, or how far it had been the result of aesthetic or artistic considerations. And we may formulate our conclusions as follows:—

The material of music consists of musical sounds, which are produced by various natural or artificial means.
