ABSTRACT

The policy texts which we examined in chapter six had already been introduced in earlier chapters; the interview texts need some introduction of their own. The main background here is the conflict which arose over Stan Hughes’ policy proposal, which we referred to in chapter one, and we present a narrative of this incident. As a shorthand, it seemed appropriate to refer to the story as ‘Jarndyce’; it involved a lengthy period where the outcome was uncertain, several individuals’ futures seemed to be at stake, and the root issue seemed to be the right of a particular profession to make a certain sort of judgment. 1
