ABSTRACT

Philosophers often speak of moralityas though it were plain what is meant by this. It seems that there are those who care about morality, and there are those who wish to opt out of moralityal most as though morality were a term comparable to military service or membership of the National Union of Railwaymen. H. would say that the expression to hell with that is not an expression of moral nihilism, as he wants to consider it, but rather a judgment of value; or at least that it often is so. Sometimes H. seemed to be speaking of someone who was familiar with the sorts of things which most people would call right or wrong: the sorts of actions which are in accordance with the accepted moral standards of the community, and the sorts of action which are not. When H. classifies the different positions which the nihilist might take up towards morals, he means, apparently, towards discussions of morals.
