ABSTRACT

A recognition of the multiplicity of moral practices should not lead to moral scepticism. On the contrary, one can distinguish between this variety where, in different ways and forms, concern is shown for moral considerations, with expediency and a complete lack of concern for any moral considerations. Someone with moral insight who is not directly involved, may be able to draw their attention to the moral issues. Many moral viewpoints develop in relation to one another; there is the thrust and counterthrust of moral warfare. Some philosophers, in an attempt to avoid the partiality which they seem to think is involved in the existence of different moral opinions, appealed to the views of a disinterested observer. Where there are a number of conflicting moral assessments of a situation, the right assessment of it is supposed to be the way the situation appears to such an observer.
