ABSTRACT

The second qaṣīda presented in full constitutes Ibn al-Rūmī’s most serious grievance against ʿUbaydallāh in a praise qaṣīda. Its unexceptional length is offset by the difficult rhyme letter ṣād Ibn al-Rūmī defiantly boasts. His tone in the metastrophe is more strident than in the above-discussed L191. In its layout, L1042 differs from L191 most visibly in the strophe, a single episode. The qaṣīda’s strophe and metastrophe have close dramaturgic parallels in other qaṣāʾid. Careful comparison of L1042 with them discloses variations in corresponding places from which this qaṣída’s message can be deduced.
