ABSTRACT

Having concluded his discussion of negative theology, viz., what the new thinking has to teach us about the element God, Rosenzweig now turns to unpack what the new thinking has to teach us about the second element, the world. As the discussion of the first element constitutes what Rosenzweig calls ‘negative theology’, this discussion constitutes the new discipline of ‘negative cosmology’ – ‘negative’ because the new way of thinking moves in opposition to the ‘positivism’ of the old, traditional way of doing philosophy; ‘cosmology’ because the negative object on which it focuses its negative thought is the cosmos.
