ABSTRACT

Movement and space is how children learn to move with confidence, imagination and safety, with an awareness of space, themselves and others. The Magpie Nursery admits children between two and four years old. Although it has no safe outside area, it is spacious indoors and practitioners have created an area with soft flooring, foam blocks, cushions and shallow ramps for the toddlers and young children to use. The team is committed to offering a good experience for physical development. The team recognises the need to compensate for the lack of outside play space and it is rare not to go to the park during the session. The children are working on the theme of travel this term and Mandy wants to bring an idea of movement and space into the activities she encourages and supports. Space is a serious limitation, but, by linking this to movement and imagination, she can scaffold the children's learning by suggestions that expand their thinking.
