ABSTRACT

‘I am not the same person, frightened of my own shadow, don’t want to know anyone or do anything, like a bear with a sore head!’ If this sounds familiar, the chances are that you have experienced an extreme event, e.g. serious car crash or assault. The likelihood is that the extreme trauma is dictating how you think about yourself and the world around you. Events that happened before the extreme trauma, such as being present at the birth of your first child, do not seem to count any more. You have a crisis of identity.
