ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book analyses in places a premium upon meaning and its contestation. It represents one of the very few attempts to actually interpret heritage in strictly economic terms. The book shows that there is an economics of heritage and heritage can also be located in economics. It combines with the multi-use and multi-consumption of heritage, which makes any attempt at synthesis so complex and prone to constant qualification. Quite what consumers make of all this is unclear and the confusion of scale messages is again an area requiring extensive research. Although our lengthy discussion of heritage and scale concludes on an optimistic note, it remains the case that the array of different scales, and the complex way in which these interact in both cultural and economic terms, significantly complicates the geography of heritage.
