ABSTRACT

The methylphenidate oral extended-release tablets have a duration of action of approximately 8 hours. These tablets are indicated for patients whose signs and symptoms have been managed with regular methylphenidate oral tablets and who prefer 8-hour dosing. Methylphenidate is rapidly and well absorbed following oral ingestion. However, bioavailability is low and peak blood concentrations are variable because of extensive hepatic first-pass metabolism. When compared to regular methylphenidate oral tablets, methylphenidate oral extended-release tablets (i.e., Ritalin-SR®) are absorbed more slowly, but to the same extent. Long-term methylphenidate pharmacotherapy, or regular personal use, may result in addiction and habituation. Prescribe methylphenidate pharmacotherapy cautiously to patients who have histories of problematic patterns of abusable psychotropic use. Methylphenidate pharmacotherapy is commonly associated with insomnia, particularly if the last daily dose is ingested late in the day.
