ABSTRACT

Modafinil pharmacotherapy is indicated solely for the symptomatic management of excessive daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy. It is not indicated for the treatment of normal fatigue states. Modafinil does not reduce the incidence or severity of cataplectic seizures that commonly are associated with narcolepsy. Modafinil is absorbed fairly rapidly following oral ingestion. Peak blood concentrations are achieved in 3 hours. The ingestion of food may decrease the rate, but not the extent, of modafinil absorption. Modafinil is bound moderately to plasma proteins and has an apparent volume of distribution of 66 liters. Prescribe modafinil pharmacotherapy cautiously to patients who have histories of problematic patterns of abusable psychotropic use. Concurrent modafinil pharmacotherapy may induce the metabolism of oral contraceptives and result in contraceptive failure.
