ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses amphetamines, mixed. It presents the approved indications of the drug for neuropsychological disorders, usual dosage and administration, available dosage forms, storage, and compatibility, and the mechanism of action. Information on clinically significant drug interactions, adverse drug reactions, and overdosage is also provided. Sold under the trade name Adderall®, the mixed amphetamines are members of the amphetamine group of sympathomimetic amines that have CNS stimulant action. Mixed amphetamines pharmacotherapy may decrease the neuronal uptake of guanethidine (Ismelin®) and, thus, decrease its antihypertensive action. Mixed amphetamines pharmacotherapy has been associated with several adverse drug reactions such as increased blood pressure, palpitations, and tachycardia as well as dizziness, dysphoria, euphoria, headache, insomnia, and overstimulation. Mixed amphetamines overdosage requires emergency symptomatic medical support of body systems with attention to increasing mixed amphetamines elimination.
