ABSTRACT

The analysis in the next two chapters is based on a sample of 364 households who live in seven large central cities in the United States. These data were gathered as part of this project and track the surveyed households for a period of 57 months — an extensive period over which in-place housing adjustments were observed. The sample includes 177 households headed by an elderly person (defined as someone 60 years of age or older at the time of the second survey wave) and 187 households headed by a nonelderly person. The sample of the nonelderly was included to provide a base against which to compare the housing adjustments made by the elderly. This should enable us to identify those aspects which really distinguish such changes made by the elderly.
