A review of previous investigations of risk factors for LTC in­ stitutionalization confirms that it is by no means clear why some elders apply to or enter a LTC institution while others do not. In­ spection of the results of these findings, as summarized in Table 1,

illustrates that few of the variables studied are consistently related to LTC institutionalization.
