ABSTRACT

This chapter presents survey findings regarding household composition, sources of income and agricultural assets - land and livestock. Survey respondents were asked to provide details about everyone who lived within the household for some or all of the year or who supported it financially. At Tshiombo, it is considered the norm for women to continue living in their natal household at least until they have had their first child and to return there for subsequent confinements. Men tend to remain part of their natal household at least until they marry, and long after in many cases. It is common practice for the youngest son of a household to reside there and to take responsibility for ageing parents. One middle-aged man also lived alone, having being abandoned by his wife and children, the sole example of a household without an adult female member. Survey respondents were asked to describe the occupations of all household members.
