ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the prospects for the further development of the local economy. It addresses the central question of this thesis, the position of agriculture within household livelihoods, and draws some conclusions based on the evidence from the household survey. This is followed by a summary of plot-holder’ opinions of the Tshiombo scheme and their priorities for reform. Households at Tshiombo obtain their livelihoods from three main sources - off-farm wages, pensions and agriculture. Total household income was calculated by aggregating off-farm income, net livestock income and net crop income. When differences in household size are taken into consideration, members of households in the top quintile enjoyed a per capita income nearly three times greater than those in the bottom quintile. Essential to any evaluation of agriculture at Tshiombo, or discussion of the prospects for reform, are the views of plot-holders themselves.
