This legend may have arisen from a distorted memory passed down by word of mouth from Lucian’s Vera Historia, but it is also possible that it has an independent origin dating back to Celtic mythology. In support of the latter view it should be noted that St. Brendon is called Abbot of Hibernia, and he is usually stated to have been of Irish birth, although in the South English Legendary (a) it is claimed that he was English.
