The latter represent the Palladia of the Emperors, whereas the Magic Sword is essentially the symbol of the Magician. It is possible to argue, of course, that in many countries kingship developed out of the magician, but we cannot be sure that this was so in China. In fact, so far as we can judge from her records, the Emperors who founded new Dynasties were usually successful warriors rather than magicians.
