ABSTRACT

Next day I cancelled the order for coolies, having decided to spend another day plant-hunting on the cliffs. I took Tashi, Kele, and Chimi with me; only Tsumbi stayed behind in the dzong. We spent an interesting day on the limestone crags, and it was late in the afternoon when we got back. Tsumbi did not appear when I called him, but after some delay he came, and I found fault with him. He seemed to comprehend nothing, and I dismissed him to the kitchen, telling him to hurry up with my dinner. But dinner was a long way off, and suddenly a row started in the gallery just outside my door. I went out. Tsumbi, already deep in my black books, had hold of Tashi and appeared to be threatening him. I went up to them and pulled Tsumbi roughly off. ‘Stop it!’ I said angrily.
