ABSTRACT
The opposition to prostitution is mainly connected with the fear of venereal disease. It is significant that the initiation of the many attempts to stamp out prostitution in Europe were coincident with the out-break of epidemics of syphilis or gonorrhoea. Before the return of Columbus's expedition and the spreading of a peculiarly virile type of venereal infection throughout Europe prostitution was either approved or tolerated.
