ABSTRACT

In the old Admiralty Charts of Espiritu Santo, the highest mountain marked is Losubunu or “Santo Peak” (5,520 ft.), in the S.W. of the island. The two previous attempts to climb the highest mountain in the New Hebrides were attempts on Losubunu. The first was made by Mr. (now Sir) Douglas Mawson, the second by Dr. F. Speiser. Mr. Mawson seems not to have ascended much above 4,000 feet. Dr. Speiser, on the contrary, seems nearly to have attained the summit, but unfortunately he did not survey his route.
