ABSTRACT
To mistake a marine monster for an island, to cast anchor on its back and to feel what one imagined to be dry land sink into the sea after lighting a fire on it, is truly, shiver my timbers!!! the height of vexation for a navigator. Judging from the number of natural history writers who mention it, this strange incident seems to have been commonplace in the Middle Ages.
