ABSTRACT

FENNEL. A very aromatic umbelliferous plant, whose seeds have an odour of anise. Fennel is eaten like celery, especially in central Italy. It is not unusual to come across people with a head of fennel under one arm, munching it with bread for lunch or dinner. The odour, at first agreeable, becomes disagreeable when fennel is used too freely, as it is, for example, by the Neapolitans, who put it into everything.
