ABSTRACT

RABBIT. Rabbits originated in Africa. From there they migrated to Spain and thence to France. Pliny and Varro say that they were so numerous in Tarragona, a city of Spain, and had dug so many tunnels under the houses, that twenty-five or thirty of the latter tumbled down. Rabbits ate all the crops of one of the Lipari Islands, and the inhabitants were reduced to famine. At one time they were so abundant in the South of France that Beaujeu tells of a Proven~al gentleman who went out with a few of his vassals and three dogs, in 1551, and returned with six hundred rabbits.
