ABSTRACT

Amongst the most interesting of Suakin’s buildings are the mosques and zawias. They cannot of course be compared with the great mosques in Cairo, the Maghreb, Spain, Persia or Pakistan, but they do compare with some of the venerable mosques of Jedda which are of very early date. The mosques of Suakin are smaller, some of the zawias may even pass unobserved among the houses, the larger ones however, are built in the same traditional manner as earlier mosques and possess a simple dignity and the peaceful atmosphere appropriate to a House of Prayer.
