ABSTRACT

Fort Handoub, was a well-built pentagonal structure with high, battered walls of accurately cut coral blocks. Its unusual shape with barely a single right-angle is a great test of the masons’ skill. Access was by a narrow draw-bridge spanning the deep surrounding ditch. The fort was protected by a perimeter wall raised high enough for the garrison to walk around the central tower without being seen from outside. It had a continuous raised platform enabling the men to use the wall to shoot across. There were two pentagonal redoubts at each of the western corners which contained six-pounder cannon.
