ABSTRACT
According to the Iraqi media story, there had been a domestic uprising against the ruling regime in Kuwait; the revolution asked for the assistance of Iraq, which was compelled by its national duty to respond to the ‘call’ of the new revolutionary government. The Iraqi media were bent on not inciting any Gulf country. It aimed its entire attack on the amir of Kuwait, whom it referred to as ‘Croesus’. Saddam Hussein wanted to assure the Gulf countries that Kuwait was a ‘special case’ that would not be repeated. The Gulf media, like Kuwait itself, were taken by surprise. The Gulf media are peaceful and restrained. They are thus easily taken by surprise. During the past decade, the Gulf media were extremely sympathetic to Saddam Hussein. The Iraqi president’s receptions were a nightly spectacle on every Gulf television network.
