ABSTRACT
The ‘foreign conspiracy’ theory is as old as human history. Throughout time, it has continued to retain its vitality and indeed it has become even more vigorous over the years. The circulation of the ‘American conspiracy’ theory was facilitated by the fact that it started during the crisis in an international environment that seemed unusual and strange. Arab hostility toward the United States stems primarily from a single cause, which is America’s unstinting support for Israel. The Palestine problem became a symbol of all that is desirable and all that is hated. It became a symbol of Arab weakness in the face of Israeli power. Many Arabs outside the Gulf were surprised by the effective military co-operation between the United States and the Gulf countries throughout the crisis. The Arabs tend to forget that, during the 1973 war, the Israeli prime minister thought of resigning and the Israeli defence minister thought of suicide.
