ABSTRACT

Commercialization of agriculture is an important but not a sufficient condition for bringing about development of the rural areas. Apart from being an administrative and market centre, the town has numerous artisanal workshops and some small-scale industries, and provides various services in the fields of agriculture, health, education, wholesale trade and transport. Apart from being an administrative and market centre, the town has numerous artisanal workshops and some small-scale industries, and provides various services in the fields of agriculture, health, education, wholesale trade and transport. Farmers sell surplus staple grains to the government or, preferably, to private traders; vegetables and fruits from home gardens are sold in the market. In 1978 the marketing of the staples in San District was assigned to the CMDT by the State Marketing Board (OPAM). Soil exhaustion may explain the lower yields in villages where all the land is under cultivation and where farms are generally smaller as compared to elsewhere in the district.
