ABSTRACT

On the plane from Washington to London – our first stop in a tour of seven countries – Sadat was pleased, proud and optimistic about the results of his visit to the United States. I, for my part, was also satisfied, feeling that I had gained new knowledge since I was glad to have met the American group in charge of the Middle East issue and felt I could deal with them. The discussions had likewise confirmed to me the power of Jewish influence. The visit had also shown that we had gained some ground within the United States itself, which had previously been denied to us. A large segment of American public opinion began to better understand the facts underlying the Arab-Israeli conflict. They now had a clearer idea of the justice and reasonableness of the Arab claims, which had hitherto been clouded by a thick smoke-screen of propaganda put out by Israel and the Jewish organizations. I considered this a good start which should be followed up and developed with care.
