ABSTRACT

The Buddha-Karita of Asvaghosha, has been translated by Edward Byles Cowellfrom Nepalese texts. Of Indian origin, around the beginning of the Christian era, it is concerned with the life and teachings of the Buddha, now quite far removed from the Pali documents of the Hinayana. Having conquered the hosts of Mara by his firmness and calmness, he the great master of meditation set himself to meditate, longing to know the supreme end. Buddha, mounted on a throne, up in the air to the height of seven palm-trees, addressed all those Nirmita Bodhisattvah. These Nirmita Bodhisattvah seen to be the nimmanarati deva of the southern Buddhists with their nimmita kama or self-created pleasures., illumining their minds.
