ABSTRACT

This chapter explains that Brewer's interpretation of South African National Students' Congress, SANSCO is highly simplistic and characterised by many contradictory, and even astounding, assertions, and thus is seriously flawed; it nonetheless provides a useful starting-point for his interpretation of SANSCO. Moreover, if SANSCO's identification with the African National Congress, ANC did facilitate mobilisation on a mass scale, it was towards common if not totally identical ends rather than any different goals related to SANSCO being a radicalised Black Consciousness, BC organisation a categorisation that, makes no sense applied to SANSCO. Finally, in its political and educational work among students, SANSCO confined itself to developing an understanding of the conditions that gave rise to the liberation movement's strategy. The chapter concludes by considering certain features of SANSCO that relate more to its internal organisation and structure. Student mobilisation and collective actions also involved SANSCO in the formulation of strategic goals.
