ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews previous discussions of educational theory, examines the methodology, explores the data and present some findings based on analyses, introduces an alternative theory of cultural representation, and outlines suggestions for future research. Data triangulated through focus group interviews and observations provided additional confirming evidence as a way to test trustworthiness, classroom observations were one way of confirming an individual’s verbal accounts. Educational scholars and researchers agree that while the literature on college preparation programs emerges slowly, little is known about what happens to students once they go to college, and much of the information that does exist is anecdotal at best. Education in culture is not a simple process of teaching neutral facts and figures to a nameless and faceless group. It should be an interactive process of individual identity development along with the creation of community.
