ABSTRACT

On June 12, 1996, Patrick State University’s Faculty Senate adopted an amended set of promotion and tenure guidelines that expanded the definition of scholarship, differentiated between community service and service as scholarship, and instituted a set of criteria to assess and reward service as scholarship. The new guidelines were the result of deliberations by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), a university-wide committee, and 20 faculty discussion groups. After PSU confirmed the new 1996 guidelines, each college within the university was given the task of revising its promotion and tenure guidelines in accordance with the new university guidelines. The School of Education began implementing their new guidelines in fall 1996. This case describes the process by which PSU, and specifically its School of Education, changed its promotion and tenure guidelines to assess and reward service as scholarship.
