ABSTRACT

In 1991–1992, St. Timothy College decided to rewrite its definition of scholarship to be more consistent with its liberal arts mission. This resulted in changes to its faculty handbook and promotion and tenure guidelines, including a written rationale for the new definition and introduction of the idea of aims and stages of scholarship. These changes have had a lasting impact on St. Timothy’s reward system for service as scholarship. This case describes the culture and the process by which St. Tims conceptualized, organized, and implemented a new vision of scholarship.
