ABSTRACT

To provide a linkage between the categories of literature on the academic profession described in the previous chapter, this study relies on data collected by an international survey of faculty conducted in 1991–93 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This chapter provides an overview of several important issues regarding the Carnegie data, particularly those concerning data collection and comparability. Following this discussion, the chapter describes the methods of analysis which produced the findings reported throughout this study. The main purpose of this chapter is to enable the reader to statistically reproduce the findings in the Carnegie data that are described in the remaining chapters of this book.
